Congratulations to YAM 2009 Senior Scholarship Winners
Every year March is set aside nationally to celebrate YOUTH ART. The Kansas Art Education Association coordinates a celebration at the state level, which features an art exhibit at the Capitol Building in Topeka and a reception for student artists, parents, and teachers. Youth Art Month is also celebrated with (2) $500 senior scholarships awarded to students of KAEA members. This year's scholarship winners were Brittany Long of Lawrence High School, Lawrence Kansas and Kelsey Sage of Shawnee Heights High School, Sublette Kansas.
Brittany Long: I have been exposed to the arts since I was just a young child. I began dancing jazz, tap, and ballet at the age of three. This sparked a lifelong obsession with finding different ways to creatively express myself. It inspired me to work hard in my art classes because I enjoyed it so much and was pretty good at it as well. In my search for creative outlets, I stumbled upon painting and fell in love. It was apparent that I had a talent for it and felt natural with a paint brush in hand. I am forever challenging myself in painting and finding new ways to show what my eyes see. I have also found a skill for drawing and working with mixed media.
As a student at Lawrence High School, I have participated in the Girl’s Tennis team and am an active member of NAHS. I hope to attend an art college in the fall such as Memphis College of Art or Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and obtain a major in illustration with a minor in art history. Brittanny's teacher is Wendy Vertachnik.
Kelsey Sage: Music and Art have always been a major part of Kelsey Sage’s life. She has a natural talent for both and has participated in music and art programs throughout her education. It was during Kelsey’s freshman year at Shawnee Heights that she realized she had a passion for studio art, especially ceramics. She has taken several types of art classes including photography, ceramics, jewelry and digital imaging.
Kelsey has participated in her school orchestra since the fourth grade and is now in her high school’s symphonic orchestra as a senior. Kelsey has been chosen for Highland Art Day, Scholastics Arts and writing awards and has displayed work at Heights on Display and the Topeka Art Guild. Kelsey is planning on attending Highland Community College for basic courses and then plans to attend a four year school to get her degree in studio art. She is considering becoming an art teacher. Kelsey's teacher is Ryan Paget.
