What’s been happening in the Visual Arts?

The Symposium on Contemporary Art & Visual Culture focused on experiencing the potential of art objects to enrich instruction and learning.  Four current exhibitions provided departure points for exciting curriculum development.  The goal was to utilize original art works within a museum gallery to enliven standards-based art education.

Objectives included:

•  develop and implement concept-based curriculum.

•  develop and implement standards-based curriculum and assessment.

•  acquire complex-level thinking strategies for classroom instruction.

•  respond to and grapple with complex issues associated with contemporary art and visual culture through the disciplines of art history and critical analysis.

We had a total of fifty-nine (59) visual arts teachers attend the symposiums and 92 attend the workshops.  The results of these efforts were outstanding with high ratings from participants.

Here are a few quotes from the evaluations.

"Great activities and ideas for getting my students involved."

"The emphasis on the Art of Questioning has really helped me to self evaluate whether I am asking critical thinking questions."

"Very informative and helpful."

"This class taught me to look even closer at art work and how I am teaching."

"Please continue to do more symposiums in the future."

"I learned a lot of good questioning strategies that will lead to more in-depth responses from my students."

"Well informed presenters, your enthusiasm was contagious."

"Can we do this every summer?"
